Maryland In the state of Maryland, elder abuse is defined as abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or exploitation of a vulnerable adult.
More specifically, Maryland defines the various forms of abuse as follows:
Abuse: The sustaining of physical injury by a vulnerable adult as a result of cruel or inhumane treatment, or as a result of a malicious act by any person.
Neglect: The willful deprivation of adequate food, clothing, medical treatment or habilitation therapy, shelter, or supervision from a vulnerable adult.
Self-neglect: The inability of a vulnerable adult to provide for his physical or mental health and well-being.
Exploitation: Any action that involves the misuse of a vulnerable adult's funds, property or person.
